I've been amazed by Scott Flansburg, rightly nicknamed "The Human Calculator." Scott has the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide faster than a human calculator. He is so good that he can even do square roots, cube roots and much more at a very wery quick pace - faster than an ordinary human using a calculator would.
He is so quick that he says "Most of the time it's my mouth slowing me down to say the answer, not my brain."
Scott Flansburg has managed to amaze audiences in America and around the world with his math skills. He is using his genius to mainly help young kids upto the age of ten learn the basics of maths so that life can be easier later on in life. After all, we as humans only use 10% of our brain. Being a human calculator will help most people use more than that. This is purely because everything in the universe revolves around mathematics.
According to Scott, we have been getting it wrong for centuries. The problem lies with the numbers one until ten. This is a broad misconception. "We ought to think and program ourselves like calculators" says Scott. "A calculator starts with zero, and ends in 9."
Having an understanding of this after watching a few video clips, I totally agree with him. Scroll to the bottom of this post to watch him in action on the Oprah Winfrey Show. You can also visit his website www.humancalculator.com to learn more about this.
Simple arithmetics can be solved using the number 9. For instance, 5+5=10. 1+0=1 therefore 10-1=9. If you think you can't add 5+5 to get 10, here's a simple solution devised by Scott.
Say you take 5, add it to 5 and you think that the answer is 11, you can mark yourself to see whether it's right. ok, 5+5=11, to prove that this is wrong, all you have to do is put the numbers 5 and 5 together to make 55. Subtract 11 from that and you get 44(55-11=44.) 4+4 does not equal 9.
According to Mr Flansburg, the Human Calculator, if you don't get a nine, your answer is wrong. And he would be quite right! Try and do the same calculation using 10 as your answer for 5+5. I'll show you. 5+5=10. To prove it, put 5 and 5 next to each other to get 55. Subtract 10 to get 45. Add 4 and 5 together - and voila, what do you get? Of you course it comes back to 9.
His genius extends to the fact that if you give him a date in the past, he would be able to tell you which day of the week it was instantly. Now that's incredible!
Scott Flansburg can go on about the numbers zero to nine for ages. This has even led him to his newest development "The Human Calendar."
